The Mayor's Proposed Property Tax Legislation
Because residential property values and tax assessments have been rising, while commercial taxes have fallen during the recession, Mayor Tom Menino has proposed legislation to shift the balance between commercial and residential property tax to put more of the overall tax burden on commercial owners. Commercial taxes would decline less and residential taxes would rise less.
How would this legislation work? Who would be affected?
Is this the best way to address Boston's property tax problem? Are there side effects we should understand? Are there other possible solutions to consider?
Free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome -- come and bring your friends and neighbors!
